THE LIGHT OF THE GOSPEL

(2 Cor 4:1,2) Therefore seeing we [who are saved, born-again saints] have this ministry, as we have received mercy [1], we faint not [Gk: to fail (in heart)]; But have renounced [Gk: disowned] the hidden [Gk: concealed] things of dishonesty [Gk: shame or disgrace], not walking in craftiness [Gk: trickery or sophistry: cunning, subtilty], nor handling the word of God deceitfully [Dict. syn: fraudulently, deviously, treacherously, faithlessly]; but by manifestation [Gk: exhibition, expression /// to render apparent] of the truth [2] commending ourselves [showing ourselves for approval] to every man's conscience [sense of morality] in the sight of God

1.    mercy = Dict.: 1. a refraining from harming or punishing offenders, enemies, persons in one’s power, etc.; kindness in excess of what may be expected or demanded by fairness; forbearance and compassion. 2. a disposition to forgive, pity, or be kind. 3. the power to forgive or be kind; clemency (to throw oneself on the mercy of the court). 4. kind or compassionate treatment; relief of suffering.

2.    (John 14:6) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

SATAN HATH BLINDED THEIR MINDS

(2 Cor 4:3-6) But if our gospel [God’s message of love for us] be hid [Gk: concealed (by covering): secret], it is hid to them that are lost [Gk: to be destroyed fully]: In whom the god of this world [i.e., Satan] hath blinded the minds [Gk: perceptions: thoughts] of them which believe not, lest the light [Gk: illumination /// to shed rays] [i.e., revelations] of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine [Gk: to beam forth] unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness [1], hath shined in our hearts [Gk: minds] [thoughts], to give the light [Gk: illumination /// to shed rays] [i.e., revelations] of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

1.    darkness = Heb: the dark; fig. misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, wickedness. [ref. Gen1:2]

TREASURES IN JARS OF CLAY

(2 Cor 4:7-9) But we have this treasure [“the glorious gospel of Christ”] in earthen vessels [i.e., in human bodies (carriers)], that the excellency of the power [Gk: miraculous power: mighty (wonderful) work] may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled [Gk: suffer tribulation] on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed [Dict. syn: puzzled, baffled, bewildered], but not in despairPersecuted, but not forsaken; cast down [Gk: thrown down], but not destroyed

(2 Cor 4:10-18) Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest [Gk: rendered apparent /// publicly] in our body. For we which live are alway [Gk: ever] delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest [Gk: rendered apparent /// publicly] in our mortal flesh. So then death worketh in us, but life in you. We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak; Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. For which cause we faint not [Gk: to fail (in heart)]; but though our outward man perish [Gk: to rot thoroughly, to ruin, decay utterly, fig. pervert: corrupt], yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction [Gk: pressure: tribulation], which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal

Amen
