(John 4:1-5)  When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples [did baptize],) He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. And he must needs go through Samaria. Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

1.       Sychar = Heb: an intoxicant, i.e. intensely alcoholic liquor:--strong drink, + drunkard, strong wine.

(John 4:6-10)  Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour [about noon]. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat [Gk: food].) Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

1.       Commentary: Jacob = Heb: heel-catcher, supplanter (Dict: to take the place of another through scheming, strategy, or the like) vs. Israel = Heb: he will rule as God, prince with God.

a.       (1 Cor 15:46)  Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

2.       Commentary: The Samaritans were ostracized from Jewish society and detested because they were of mingled Jewish and Gentile blood. In the Garden of Eden, the tree of life was pure “good,” whereas the tree of the knowledge of “good and evil” was mingled and impure. This hostile separation was a significant factor in causing Samaritan religious doctrine, although based upon the Pentateuch, to be different from the Jews in many areas. The Samaritans built their own Temple on Mount Gerizim (blessings) across from Mount Ebal (cursings), which was their substitute for the Temple of God which they were forbidden to attend in Jerusalem.

(John 4:10)  Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

1.       (John 7:37-39)  In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

2.       (John 16:7)  Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient [Gk: good, profitable] for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter [the Holy Spirit] will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

(John 4:11-14)  The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep [Gk: profound]: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well [Gk: (through the idea of gushing plumply), fountain] of water springing up into everlasting life.

(John 4:15-18)  The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw [she is still in the flesh]. Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband [i.e., you are living in sin]: in that saidst thou truly [The Word of God (John 1:14) interacts with her that she feels the conviction (pressure) of her sin against God].

(John 4:19-24)  The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet [she saw him first a man, now a prophet]. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain [Gerizim]; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship [she initiates a religious discussion with the prophet]. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father [worship will no longer be physically based and manifested, i.e., the Old Testament sacrifical system]. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship [“the invisible God” Col 1:15]: for salvation is of the Jews [you must know Him and worship Him before you can be His instrument for salvation]. But the hour cometh, and now is [the advent of the New Testament sacrifical system], when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

(John 4:25-27)  The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

(John 4:28-34)  The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city [knowing Him to be the Messiah, i.e., she was now saved, and acting as a missionary], and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

1.       Commentary: “left her waterpot” = Why did she leave her waterpot? She came to Jacob’s well to fetch and bear back to the city natural water in her waterpot. After meeting Jesus Christ, she became “a waterpot” herself, and went back to the city bearing spiritual water.

a.       (Mark 16:15)  And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

2.       (1 Tim 2:3,4)  For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

(John 4:35-38)  Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields [at all the people of the city coming forward]; for they are white already to harvest [to be cut off from this world, and saved into Heaven, “my barn” Mat 13:30]. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured [the Samaritan woman and others with whom she spoke], and ye are entered into their labours.

(John 4:39-43)  And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all [“all things” John 4:25] that ever I did. So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. And many more believed because of his own word; And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
